Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) is an enterprise real-time communications platform, providing infrastructure support for rich presence information, file transfer, instant messaging as well as voice and video communication. These features are available within an organization, between organizations, and with external users via a public URL.
Microsoft Office Communicator is a unified communications client that helps people be more productive by enabling them to communicate easily with others using a range of communication options, including instant messaging (IM), voice, and video.

Instant MessagingRich presence that works with real time text based communication that allows users to communicate almost instantaneously with contacts.
- Parties Presence Information. Have access to real-time user status information with all the ways you communicate: phone, conferencing, instant messaging, and e-mail. Rich Presence States includes Online, Busy, Away, Offline, Do not Disturb, Be Right Back, and customize notes their notes to provide additional information. It also lets user's presence state to update automatically to "In a Meeting" based on their personal calendar stored in Exchange.
- Audio, Video Web Conferencing. Setting up a conference call is really easy. If you are in a phone call or in an instant message session, you can turn it into a conference call or videoconference with only a drag and drop. Single-click conferencing lets users select a group of contacts and easily initiate an IM, audio, or video conference. Supports voice and videoconferencing tools that include white boarding, polling and application and desktop sharing.
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). With VoIP, users can use the telephone the same way and easy way that they would write an e-mail with Click-to-Call. Features include: Call Authorization, Call Forwarding, Call Transfer, Call Waiting, Click to Call, Conference Call, Multiple Call, Inbound and Outbound calling, and more.
- Communication Logging. Configure Office Communication Server to store a user’s conversation history in a Microsoft Office Outlook folder, thanks to Microsoft Office Integration.
